Company Information:
Fiat S.p.A. is engaged principally in the manufacture and sale of automobiles, agricultural and construction equipment and commercial vehicles. The Company also manufactures other products and systems, principally components, metallurgical products and production systems. In addition, the Company is involved in other sectors, including insurance, aviation, publishing and communications and service operations. Fiat's significant subsidiaries, as of December 31, 2002, were Fiat Auto Holdings B.V., CNH Global N.V., Iveco N.V., Ferrari S.p.A., Magneti Marelli Holding S.p.A., Comau B.V., Teksid S.p.A., FiatAvio S.p.A., Toro Assicurazioni S.p.A., Itedi-Italiana Edizioni S.p.A. and Business Solutions S.p.A. The name is the acronym of Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Italian Car Factory of Turin), founded by Giovanni Agnelli. The history of Fiat dates back over a century ago to 1899 which was the dawn of the Italian industrialisation. In 1916 the construction of their world famous Lingotto factory began. It was the largest in Europe, occupied five floors and had a futuristic test track on the roof. It soon became the emblem of the Italian automotive industry and was completed in 1922. In 1934 and 1936 two cars were released to the market; the Balilla and the Topolino. Both were incredibly successful and were produced until 1955. During the war years there was a drastic reduction in the production of cars, while the construction of commercial vehicles increased considerably. In 1948 the reconstruction of the plants destroyed by war was completed and profits started to increase. In 1958 production started growing enormously, both for automobiles and farm machinery. In Italy this was the period of the economic boom and the auto sector was the driving force of the economy. Fiat bought its first share of Ferrari in 1969 and now owns the majority of the company. Its principle activity today is the manufacture of automobiles under the brand names Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Innocenti, Maserati and Ferrari. It is now Italy's largest industrial concern. It also has significant worldwide operations, operating in over 60 countries with over 1,000 companies that employ over 200,000 people, 111,000 of whom are outside Italy. |
