Sheffield United Plc operate a professional football club. Revenues are mainly derived through its footballing activities and, to a smaller extent, corporate hospitality, conference, banqueting and stewarding facilities. The Company employs approximatly 200 people.In May 1889 the secretary if the Sheffield football club announced that after a successful ad campaign to attract players they has recruited enough members to form a full side. Their first season started in August 1889 when they beat another Sheffield side, The Sheffield Club 3-1. It was during this season that the club made their debut appearance in the FA Cup. They won their first four games during this tournament but were knocked out by Bolton Wanderers losing by a record breaking 13-0. They were given a place in the 2nd Division in 1892 and were promoted to 1st Division the following year. They remained in this division for over 40 years. United returned to the 1st division in 1939 when the league was suspended because of war. The post-war period was one of highs and lows for United as they moved between 1st and 2nd division 7 times between 1949 and 1976. They were relegated to the 4th division in 1981 but bounced straight back into Division 3 after just one season. United finished 3rd in that division in 1983 but were promoted to Division 2 on goals scored, edging out Hull City. In 1992 United became founder members on the Premier League and finished the season in 14th position. |
