In 1965 the Airports Authority Bill was passed and the British Airports Authority subsequently established. The following year the BAA assumed ownership and responsibility for Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Prestwick airports in Scotland. BAA Plc floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1987.
The principal activities of BAA, a commercial operator of airports, are the provision and management of airport facilities in the UK and overseas. Initially a public owned company and privatised during the eighties, BAA own and operate seven UK airports.
BAA is also involved in airport-related property development, however it has considered the possibility of a demerger with its property subsidiary, BAA Lynton. Operating the Heathrow Express rail link between Heathrow and Paddington, the Group is in a position to accommodate more than 178 million passengers. It has two hundred shops, including duty-free, and other retail concessions at airports in both the UK and the US, on board 28 different airlines and at either end of the Channel Tunnel. |
