Celtic are a Scottish professional soccer club from Glasgow. Revenues are generated through ticket sales, sponsoring, merchandising and TV fees. Celtic F.C was formed in 1888 by a priest by the name of brother Walfrid. The club was originally started to serve the poor Irish/Catholic immigrants in the east end of Glasgow. The club grew from strength to strength and was soon one of the most successful clubs in Scotland and consequently became the main focal point for the ever increasing Irish community in the country. Celtic Park (or Parkhead) was originally situated where the present cemetery now stands until it was rebuilt on a piece of land opposite the cemetery. Players said that when the moved grounds that it “was like leaving a graveyard for paradise”. Celtic Football Club reached an all time high in 1967 when the won every competition entered: Scottish League, Scottish Cup, League Cup, Glasgow Cup, and the became the first British club to win the European Cup defeating, the Italians, Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon. In 1988 Celtic celebrated the centenary seasons (1987/88) by winning the first “double” in 11 years. The accomplishment marks the 35th league title and the 28th Scottish Cup. In March, 1994 Fergus McCann joined the club and for the first time in its history Celtic was made a Plc and with it bought the most successful share issue of any football club. At last the supporters were given the chance to own a piece of their history. |
