Watford Leisure is the trading name for Watford Football Club. The club was established in 1881, as Watford Rovers, and became a professional football club in 1897. Watford Football Club, or The Hornets are a London based Football Club. 1881: Established as Watford Rovers. 1890: Watford Rovers became a wing of West Herts Club at Cassio Rd. 1896: West Herts joined the Southern League. 1897: The club became a professional side. 1898: Unable to survive as separate sides, West Herts and Watford St Mary’s merge and form Watford Football Club. 1900: Southern League Division Two Champions. Promoted after Test Match (Watford FC 2 Sheppey United 0). 1903: First Watford FC Manager appointed – John Goodall. 1904: Southern League Division Two Champions. Promoted to Division One. 1915: Watford FC won the Southern League for the first time. 1920: The club became a founder member of the Football League Division Three South. 1922: Watford play their first game at their new home, Vicarage Road Ground. 1947: Bill Findlay quits as Manager after 10 years. 1948: Watford sign seven new players in a week and appoint Eddie Hapgood as their new Manager. 1969: Football League Division Three Champions for the first time. Promoted to Division Two on goal average. 1982: After a very successful season Watford are promoted to Division One. 1983: The Hornets finish their first season in a runners-up position and secure themselves a UEFA cup place. 1984: The club have another great season and reach FA Cup final. They lose to Everton. 1987: FA Cup semi finalists . |
