Company Information:
Millwall Holdings Plc was established in 1989 and is the holding company primarily engaged in the operation of a professional UK football club and other related activities. The club, originally known by the name of Millwall Rovers was founded in 1885 by the workers of a jam factory based on the Isle of Dogs. A large proportion of the players were from Scottish origin hence why the team chose their club colour to be blue and white. Millwall had four separate grounds on the island and it wasn’t until 1910 that they relocated across the river and took residency at their new home ‘The Den’. Millwall, now nicknamed The Lions, reached the semi finals of the F.A Cup in 1903 whilst still only a Southern League side. The club remained in this league for 10 years following their move to New Cross and in 1920 they became founder members of the Football League Division Three. In 1928 the side were promoted to the Second Division and in 1933 they achieved their highest league placing, finishing seventh. But after the unfortunate death of their much loved Manager Bob Hunter The Lions failed to win any of their final eight games and were relegated the following season. In 1937 Millwall became the first ever Third Division side to reach the Semi-Finals of the FA Cup and a year later they went on to win the Third Division championship. It was after the end of the Second World War that the side began to struggle as they were delegated back to Division Three and in 1958 they became founder members of the new Fourth Division. The sixties were a great period for the club. In December 1966 they set a new record of winning 59 home league games. George Graham began managing the club in 1982 and after saving the team from relegation set about a major rebuilding project. |
