Company Information:
Birmingham City Plc was incorporated 1997. The Group operate the business side of professional football club 'Birmingham City FC', encompassing marketing, sponsorships, merchandising and functions of various football matches. The club was founded in 1875 under the name of Small Heath Alliance and it was not until1905 that the club became known as Birmingham City. In 1906 interest in the team grew and enabled the team to move to the current St Andrews stadium site – the opening fixture attracting in excess of 30,000 supporters. Birmingham City’s first appearance at Wembley Stadium came in 1931 when they faced their rivals, West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup Final. The match was a close but unfortunately Birmingham City lost the match 2 goals to 1. In 1956 the club achieved their highest ever league position, finishing sixth and yet again reached the FA Cup Final, this time playing Manchester City. The match did not end favourably for Birmingham City, the final score being 3-1 to Manchester City. The club made another major final appearance in 1960, and this time it was on the European stage. They were entered into the Inter-City Fairs Cup, loosing at the last hurdle to Barcelona by an aggregate of 4-1. It wasn’t until 10 years later that the youngster Trevor Francis was introduced to the club. The striker went on to score 133 goals for Birmingham City and was the first player to be sold for 1 million pounds when he joined Nottingham Forest. He returned to the club two decades later to take the team to the top as manager. |
